Thomas Fleming School

Fifth Grade Students

Mrs. Auch’s and Mrs. Coviello’s 5th grade classes

On December 8, 2009, 46 fifth grade students of the Thomas Fleming School in Essex, VT used a video-conferencing system to speak with Senator Leahy in Washington, DC. After studying the Constitution, the students were eager to ask the Senator about various aspects of his job, his life, and the political processes of the government and Congress. A sample of the questions asked during their 30 minute chat, are listed below. This is the second chat that Senator Leahy has conducted with the Thomas Fleming School.

Is it exciting work being a Senator, what is a typical work day for you and what is the best part of your job?

We have written bills in our class and simulated Congress. We would like to know how many bills pass every year and what has been the best bill you were involved with? Have you written any bills?

Do you get along with all the members of the Senate? How often do you talk with the President?

Do you travel to other countries?

What has been your greatest accomplishment?
