Middlebury Union High School

On November 16, 2011, Senator Leahy held an online chat with 22 juniors and seniors from Middlebury Union High School including a former Senate Page, William Conlon. Using Skype to communicate with students and their teacher, Senator Leahy spoke about pieces of legislation the students were interested in including President Obama’s Jobs Bill, The Respect for Marriage Act, and the PATRIOT Act as well as some local topics such as Vermont Yankee and legislation to help small farms.  Students also asked about the Senator’s interest in the Congressional Internet Caucus and as his opinion on the most overlooked issues in national politics. This was Senator Leahy’s second online chat for the 2011-2012 academic year. Examples of questions asked by the students are below.

Doug: What is your opinion on the Occupy Wall Street Movement?  What do you anticipate the  outcome will be?  How long will it last

Ruby: What is the biggest change you have seen in the Senate over the course of your 37 years?

Duncan: What is your view on Obama’s Jobs bill?  Are there aspects that you like or would like to see changed? 

Will: What is the most overlooked issue in national politics?

Miles: What is your stance on the Lowell Wind Power Project? 

Sean: What are your opinions on the VT Yankee issue? 

Daniel: What is your opinion on Wikileaks? 

Issac: What is your opinion of the Tea Party?  Will it be a lasting political influence?
