Lake Region Union High School

On November 9, 2011 Senator Leahy held his first online chat of the 2011-2012 school year with 16 juniors and seniors from Lake Region Union High School. Using Skype to communicate with students, their advisors, and principal, Senator Leahy shed light on several pieces of legislation the students were interested in including The Respect for Marriage Act, PROTECT IP, The Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act, and others.  Students also asked about his role in the movie The Dark Knight and his thoughts on the Occupy Wall Street movement as well as aid for Israel.

Senator Leahy chats via Skype from his Washington office
with students from Lake Region Union High School.

The following are a sample of the questions asked by the students:

Alison: To deal with Human Trafficking in the U.S, the T.V.P.A is going to regulate the way law officials handle the problems that face them and provide assistance to the victims. What is your understanding of the different approaches the Senate and Congress are taking to prevent human trafficking, and give the victims the help they need?

Alyssa: The Occupy Wall Street group is expanding, planning sit-ins and protests. There is the idea that this alliance may become the “Tea Party of the Left” involving political action. Do you consider this a possibility and where do you think this movement will go?

Cheyenne: When dealing with same-sex marriage do you believe marriage should be between one man and one woman and civil unions for same-sex couples, or would you rather amend the constitution to fit a more inclusive idea of marriage?

Chelsea: What do you think of the program Upward Bound and what are you planning to do to fight for these programs that are having cuts in their budgets?

Shaquille: What was it like acting side by side with characters that you grew up loving in the movie “Dark Knight?”

Tangi: How far is the limit, in your opinion, to where we help our allies before helping ourselves?
