Statement Of Senator Patrick Leahy On Vermont Flooding Due To Hurricane Irene

Middlesex –Senator Patrick Leahy issued the following statement on the historic and catastrophic flooding in Vermont due Hurricane Irene.   Leahy will tour hard hit areas of Vermont by helicopter today with Governor Shumlin.

“Marcelle and I are keeping all Vermonters who are suffering due to Hurricane Irene in our thoughts and prayers.   We are resilient and strong, but are faced with devastating flooding in many of our communities, worse than most Vermonters can remember.

"My staff and I have been following storm developments minute by minute, and I will be joining Governor Shumlin today on a helicopter tour of flood damaged areas.   We will be working around the clock with the governor, the Vermont National Guard, and emergency management officials get help to towns, villages, businesses and citizens in need of assistance.    I plan to report directly to President Obama on what I see.

"I would like to thank the brave first responders, utility workers, our National Guard, weather experts and emergency personnel on the federal, state and local level who have worked so hard to warn us of what was coming and help us in our initial response.   I am also grateful to the members of the Vermont media for their work in warning Vermonters about this storm.

"I urge all Vermonters to listen closely to advice from the State of Vermont to avoid leaving home unless asked to by emergency personnel.”
