Statement Of Senator Patrick Leahy On The Death Of Senator Arlen Specter

[Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Senator Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) issued the following statement on the death of Senator Arlen Specter (D-Pa.). Senator Leahy served as ranking member of the Judiciary Committee while Senator Specter served as chairman and vice versa. They enjoyed a close and cooperative bipartisan relationship that spanned nearly three decades, with the two working on issues ranging from protecting civil liberties following the Sept. 11 attacks to advancing bipartisan asbestos legislation and the confirmation hearings for Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Samuel Alito.]

“Arlen Specter was a friend and a Senator who embodied the best values of the Senate. Like the Republicans who have represented Vermont, Arlen always understood the interest of the country had to come before the interest of the party. His was an example for all Senators of either party. Marcelle and I express our condolences to Joan and their family.”
