Remarks Of Senator Patrick Leahy At The Opening Of The Burlington Community Health Center

Remarks As Prepared For Delivery

Others have delved into the rich history of the health center, its origins as a true outgrowth of the community with a mission of those who needed its services, regardless of ability to pay.  From my days as States Attorney, I remember the Center’s first home on North Street.

Since those days, I have been proud to see the Center receive its designation as a Federally Qualified Health Center, to have helped find funding to help the Center after it outgrew current spaces, secured the resources for technology upgrades, and finally to have fought to pass the stimulus which provided the resources for this new expansion.

There are far too many Vermonters who, because they are low-income or uninsured, have no access to health care.  Thankfully, for over 40 years the Community Health Center has served as a beacon for those Vermonters.  It has proven to be the answer to their health care problems.

This new building is a fitting space for the quality of the care that is provided here.  It’s not an overstaffed building with care given in small rooms.  It’s a first class facility that any Vermonter would be proud to come to for a checkup.  The care being provided here is a part of Vermont’s transformational health care delivery system and a critical resource for ensuring access to primary care.

I have noted in the past, and still believe it now, that this Health Center is a jewel in the Old North End.  I know that in this new building, the community will enjoy improved and expanded access to their already wonderful services.

Congratulations to Jack Donnely, former director Joe Arioli, and everyone at the Health Center.  Most importantly, a hearty welcome to the members of the community to the new home of YOUR health center.
