Reaction Of Senator Patrick Leahy, Who Has Led Efforts In Congress To Ban Anti-Personnel Landmines, To A Statement By A Pentagon Spokesman That The Trump Administration’s Policy On Anti-Personnel Landmines Remains U.S. Policy

I have spoken to Secretary of Defense Austin, as recently as last week, about the need to return to the Obama policy on landmines.  I have spoken to President Biden about this over many years, and I’m confident that his administration will do the right thing and renounce these indiscriminate weapons that have no place in the arsenal of civilized nations.  That is why, 27 years ago, President Clinton ordered the Pentagon to develop alternatives to anti-personnel mines.  It is completely unacceptable that today Pentagon bureaucrats are making the same reflexive arguments that have been repudiated for years.
