Leahy Comment On Senate Republicans’ Insistence On Simply Extending Surveillance Authorities (NSA Dragnet Collection Of Americans’ Ph. Messages) Without Change

Comment Of Senator Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.),
Ranking Member, Senate Judiciary Committee,
On Senate Republicans’ Insistence To Reauthorize Surveillance Authorities Without Change

May 7, 2015

“A handful of Senate Republicans took to the floor this morning to defend a dragnet surveillance program that intrudes on their constituents’ privacy. In doing so, these Republicans are ignoring the findings of national security experts that this program is unnecessary, and the decision by a federal appellate court earlier today that the program is illegal. Nevertheless, these Republicans seem intent on demonstrating that they are wholly out of touch with the facts, the law, and the American people on this issue.

“I will not agree to any extension of this program. Congress should take up and pass the bipartisan USA FREEDOM Act, which would ban bulk collection under Section 215 and enact other meaningful surveillance reforms.”
