Leahy Announces Witness List For Satellite TV Hearing

WASHINGTON (Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2009) – Senate Judiciary Committee Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) Wednesday announced witnesses who will testify at a hearing on Wednesday, February 25, on “Ensuring Television Carriage in the Digital Age.”  The hearing will examine the Satellite Home Viewer Extension and Reauthorization Act, which is slated to expire at the end of 2009.

Leahy and others are expected to introduce legislation to reauthorize SHVERA later this year.  The Copyright Office has issued recommendations for the reauthorization.  Representatives from network television, satellite providers, and broadcasters will testify, including:  Charles Ergen, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Dish Network; K. James Yager, the Chief Executive Officer of Barrington Broadcasting Group and the Chair of the National Association of Broadcasters; and Martin D. Franks, the Executive Vice President for Policy, Planning and Government Relations for the CBS Corporation.

The hearing will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 25, in room 226 of the Dirksen Senate Office Building.  It will be webcast live online.  Prepared witness testimony and statements from Committee members will also be made available on the Senate Judiciary Committee’s website.
