Judiciary Committee Notices Seventh Nominations Hearing Of 2009
After Republican Boycott, Judicial Nominee To Appear In Rare Second Hearing
WASHINGTON (Tuesday, April 21, 2009) – Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) Tuesday noticed a hearing to consider pending judicial and executive nominations. It will be the Committee’s seventh nominations hearing of the year. The hearing will be held April 29.
The Committee will consider the nominations of Thomas E. Perez to be the Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division at the Department of Justice, and the nomination of Andre Davis to fill a vacancy on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. Perez was nominated by President Obama on March 31. Davis was nominated on April 3.
At the request of Committee Republicans, Leahy has also invited Judge David Hamilton to testify in a rare second confirmation hearing. Hamilton is a federal district court judge from Indiana who has been nominated to fill a vacancy on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. He has received support from both Indiana Senators. Hamilton first appeared before the Committee on April 1.
“It has been four weeks since Judge Hamilton first appeared before the Committee, and I am disappointed that Committee Republicans have yet to ask a single question of this nominee,” Leahy said. “Nonetheless, at the request of the Ranking Member, I have invited Judge Hamilton to testify on April 29. Judge Hamilton has the strong support of his home state senators, Senator Lugar and Senator Bayh. After Judge Hamilton appears again before the Committee, I hope Republican members will not further delay our consideration of this qualified judicial nominee.”
The hearing will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 29, in room 226 of the Dirksen Senate Office Building. The hearing will be webcast live online. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.) will chair the hearing.
Materials on pending nominees are available on the Senate Judiciary Committee website.
