Fraud Enforcement To Be Focus Of First SJC Hearing Of 112th Congress

TUESDAY, Jan. 18, 2011 – Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) Tuesday released a notice for the first Committee hearing of the 112th Congress.  Leahy announced last week his intent to hold a hearing focused on fraud enforcement on Jan. 26.

Two senior Department of Justice officials will testify at the hearing: Assistant Attorney General Lanny Breuer of the Criminal Division and Assistant Attorney General Tony West of the Civil Division.  In the last fiscal year alone, the Justice Department has recovered more than $3 billion of taxpayers’ dollars through fraud enforcement actions.  In the last Congress, Leahy partnered with incoming Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) to author the Fraud Enforcement and Recovery Act (FERA), which strengthened tools and increased resources available to federal prosecutors to find, prosecute and jail those who commit financial fraud.  The bill was among the first signed into law by President Obama in 2009.

The hearing, entitled “Protecting American Taxpayers: Significant Accomplishments and Ongoing Challenges in the Fight Against Fraud,” will focus on recent successes in fighting fraud following the enactment of FERA and a renewed focus on enforcement, and will look ahead to what additional steps are needed to further improve the Justice Department’s ability to root out and prosecute fraud.

In a speech on Jan. 11, Leahy announced his intent to make fraud-fighting initiatives a priority in the 112th Congress.  Leahy and Grassley also worked together on anti-fraud provisions that were included in the Affordable Care Act and the Wall Street Reform Act.

The hearing will be held Wednesday, Jan. 26, at 10 a.m. in Room 226 of the Dirksen Senate Office Building.  The hearing will be webcast live online.
