President Today Signs Leahy-Authored Bulletproof Vest Partnership Grant Program
WASHINGTON (MONDAY, May 16, 2016) – At a White House ceremony awarding 13 law enforcement officers the Medal of Valor, the nation’s highest honor for law enforcement officers, President Obama Monday announced he has signed Senator Patrick Leahy’s (D-Vt.) legislation reauthorizing his lifesaving Bulletproof Vest Partnership Grant Program, than a week after it cleared Congress.
Leahy said: “This week hundreds of the nation’s police officers gathered at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial, which is engraved with the names of more than 20,000 law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty. In Vermont, and across the nation, the Bulletproof Vest program has proven its effectiveness. It helps save lives among those who protect our communities. I hope that renewing this program will help keep other names from going up on that wall.”
Leahy teamed up with former Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell (R-Colo.) to establish the original in the wake of the Drega shooting rampage on the Vermont-New Hampshire border in 1997. Federal officers engaged in that shootout were protected by body armor, but many of the state officers were not. Two state troopers were killed in the shootout. Since then, the program has helped equip law enforcement officers in Vermont with more than 4400 bulletproof vests, and more than 1.2 million vests across the country.
