Comments of Senator Patriick Leahy On Committee Progress On The Free Flow Of Information Act

[Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) made the following comments about the Free Flow of Information Act at an executive business meeting on Thursday.  Under Leahy’s chairmanship in the last Congress, the Judiciary Committee for the first time reported legislation to establish a federal shield for reporters.  He first listed the Free Flow of Information Act for Committee consideration in April, and the bill has been stalled before the Committee.]

“I remain committed to establishing a meaningful Federal shield law.  I am disappointed that after seven months this Committee was not able to report the Free Flow of Information Act today.  I would urge the Republicans on this Committee who have remaining amendments to work with Senator Specter and Senator Schumer to address those concerns and for them to come to me with a limited number of amendments.  If Republicans on the Committee are unwilling to cooperate in finishing our consideration of this bill,  I would expect Senator Specter and Senator Schumer to take this important measure directly to the Senate calendar.”
