Comments Of Senator Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), On The Looming Government Shutdown September 30, 2013
“With the government on the verge of shutting down, a small group in Congress continues to play politics with the very programs and policies so vital to millions of Americans. Children on Head Start programs. Veterans returning from combat. Seniors who depend on Medicare. Repairs are suspended to roads and bridges that are about to collapse. Our recovery from floods and hurricanes is hurt. Our nation’s security is at risk.
“Our constituents elect us to lead, not to play bumper sticker politics. It erodes Americans' confidence in their elected officials when we continue to bring the government to the brink in every debate. My door is always open to any Member of Congress, Republican or Democrat, who wants to reach a compromise. But the ‘my way or the highway’ approach of a small minority once again is bringing the government to the brink. Congress has a real opportunity to reject the slogans, the politicking, and the influence of pressure groups, and show real leadership. That's what we've done in the past, and what we must do now and in the future.”
