Comment On The Passing Of Dr. Dorothy I. Height
“Marcelle and I join Americans across the nation in mourning the passing of an American heroine and true champion of civil rights and women’s rights, Dr. Dorothy Irene Height. As President of the National Council of Negro Women, Dr. Height led the fight for civil rights and equality for women from the homes of hardworking Americans straight to the halls of Congress. During tumultuous times in our nation’s history, she was a leading voice and tireless advocate for school desegregation, voting rights, employment opportunities and public accommodations.
“Dr. Height was among those invited to the White House to witness President John F. Kennedy sign the Equal Pay Act into law in 1963. Four decades later, her influence was felt when Congress enacted the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. Our nation is richer, better and more inclusive because of her life’s work.”
