Comment Of Senator Patrick Leahy On Reports Of NSA Break-In Of Email Data Centers

[Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) issued the following comment Wednesday responding to reports that communications links between the data centers of Internet companies Google and Yahoo were infiltrated by the National Security Administration. This week, Leahy introduced the bipartisan USA FREEDOM Act with Congressman Jim Sensenbrenner (R-Wisc.) that would require greater oversight, transparency, and accountability with respect to the government’s surveillance authorities.]

“I am deeply concerned by reports that the NSA is breaking into the overseas communications links between data centers operated by U.S. companies.  If the reports are true, this infiltration could be sweeping in the communications of millions of Americans who use the services of these two U.S. companies every day.  I have asked the administration for a briefing on this matter.  I will be asking whether this report is accurate, what legal authority the government is using, and how they are protecting the privacy rights of law-abiding Americans.”
