Comment Of Senator Patrick Leahy On The Public Hearing In Newport Tuesday Night On The Proposed Donation To/Federal Acquisition Of The Dunn Estate On Lake Memphremagog

[Senator Patrick Leahy, a senior member of the Subcommittee on the Interior of the Senate Appropriations Committee (which oversees the Senate’s work in writing the annual budget bill for the Department of the Interior and related agencies), raised Michael Dunn’s offer, and the upcoming deadline, with Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar, in a Senate hearing on March 9.  Leahy before and after that has worked to facilitate the process of helping the State of Vermont and the Department of Interior prepare for that deadline, in the event of a decision to accept Mr. Dunn’s offer.]

"Michael Dunn has offered a wonderful and lasting gift to Vermonters by bequeathing his spectacular Lake Memphremagog property for conservation and public recreation.  Earlier this year I spoke directly with Interior Secretary Ken Salazar about this opportunity and about the September deadline, asking that he not let it slip by.  I am pleased about all of the progress made since then, by the strong interest in and turnout for the public meeting, and by the overwhelmingly positive response by local residents and community leaders about this opportunity.”
