Comment Of Senator Patrick Leahy On The Administration’s National Strategy To Address Prescription Drug Abuse

“With the release of this national strategy, Director Kerlikowske and officials from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Food and Drug Administration, and the Drug Enforcement Administration are continuing important efforts to stop prescription drug abuse.  At a Judiciary Committee field hearing in Barre last year, Director Kerlikowske and I heard directly from people on the front lines in Vermont about the state’s efforts to combat drug-related crime and particularly the growing problem of prescription drug abuse. Vermont’s civic-minded, all-hands-on-deck approach to dealing with this serious problem continues to help advance the dialogue throughout the country about what solutions work best.  A comprehensive response like that released today, which includes education and prevention, is an important step toward breaking the cycle of drug abuse and crime.”
