Comment Of Senator Patrick Leahy On Nominations To The Privacy And Civil Liberties Oversight Board

Comment Of Senator Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.),
Chairman, Senate Committee On The Judiciary,

On Nominations To The Privacy And Civil Liberties Oversight Board

December 16, 2010

“I welcome the President’s announcement today that he intends to nominate two individuals to serve as Members of the Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board.  Congress created this Board at the recommendation of the 9-11 Commission, to ensure that privacy and civil liberties interests are appropriately considered when our Government develops its counterterrorism policies.   The work of this Board is essential to protecting Americans’ privacy rights and civil liberties in the Digital Age.  That is why I have worked hard to make sure that the Board is reconstituted with the personnel and resources needed to fulfill its vital mission.

“Given the many national security challenges facing our nation, the Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board is too important for us to let it fall by the wayside.  I look forward to considering these important nominations.”
