Comment Of Senator Patrick Leahy On House Introduction Of The America Invents Act

“I am pleased that Chairman Smith and House leaders are committed to reforming the nation’s patent system, and I welcome the introduction of the America Invents Act in the House of Representatives today.  Congressman Smith, Congressman Berman and others have been true partners on the path toward enacting meaningful patent reform legislation.  The America Invents Act introduced in the House tracks closely with its bipartisan counterpart that recently passed the Senate.  The similarity in the bills is no coincidence.  We have been working on a bicameral, bipartisan basis for six years now, and the Senate bill, which overwhelming passed earlier this month, was structured on the original patent reform bill introduced by Chairman Smith in 2005.  I look forward to working closely with Chairman Smith to ensure that patent reform legislation is on the President’s desk before the end of the year, and I thank him for his leadership in the House on this issue.”
