Comment Of Senator Patrick Leahy On False Claims Act Settlements In 2011
“Today’s announcement by the Justice Department that in this year alone, investigators and prosecutors have recovered more than $3 billion in taxpayer dollars through False Claims Act cases is an important reminder of why we must support anti-fraud efforts. The False Claims Act is a critical tool in the fight against waste, fraud and abuse against the government, and our investment in prosecuting these cases is returned many times over. The Justice Department has recovered a record-breaking $8.7 billion in False Claims Act recoveries during the Obama administration. The bipartisan Fighting Fraud to Protect Taxpayers Act will further help fraud recoveries at no additional cost to the taxpayers. I hope the Senate will pass this commonsense legislation in January.”

Senator Leahy is the lead author of the bipartisan Fraud Enforcement and Recovery Act, which was signed into law in 2009. He joined with Senator Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) earlier this year to introduce the Fighting Fraud to Protect Taxpayers Act (S.890), which would reinvest a small portion of money collected from fraud cases and other cases back into fraud enforcement. This will increase enforcement and recoveries at no additional cost to American taxpayers. The legislation won overwhelming support from the Senate Judiciary Committee in May.
