Comment Of Senator Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), Chairman, Senate Judiciary Committee, On The White House Proposal To Combat Patent Trolls

[Judiciary Committee Chairman Senator Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) issued the following comment Tuesday on the White House’s release of proposals and administrative actions to combat patent troll abuse.  Leahy said recently that he will soon introduce legislation this Congress to ensure American retailers and innovating businesses are not impeded by misuse of the patent system.  Leahy is also a lead author of the bipartisan Leahy-Smith America Invents Act, the landmark patent reform law which was signed in to law by President Barack Obama in 2011.]

“I share the President’s objective of reducing the drain on our economy caused by patent trolling.  The United States patent system is vital for our economic growth, job creation, and technological advance.  Unfortunately, misuse of low-quality patents through patent trolling has tarnished the system’s image.  I hear frequently from Vermont businesses about how patent trolls have impacted their operations and hurt our state economy.  I look forward to working with the President as I continue my bipartisan and bicameral work to reduce trolling and protect American innovators and retailers.”
