Comment of Senate Appropriations Committee Vice Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) On President Trump’s Visit To The Border Wall
While President Trump is spending the afternoon examining prototypes for his misguided and ineffective border wall, the American people are waiting on the President to make good on his pledge — which became the central promise of his campaign for president — that Mexico, not American taxpayers, foot the bill for this boondoggle.
The President has failed to keep that promise.
For years there has been a bipartisan consensus in Congress for sensible, workable, cost-effective border security. Spending billions of U.S. taxpayer dollars on a 30-foot wall along our southern border is not sensible, workable, or cost-effective. It is a waste of taxpayer dollars, a diversion from efforts that would work, and an insult to our neighbor to the south. We should be investing in what protects the nation and brings us together, not in wasteful ego-driven spending like this.
