Ahead of Police Week, Leahy TODAY Will Urge Senate to Renew Life-Saving Bulletproof Vest Program
WASHINGTON (Tuesday, May 6, 2014) – Ahead of National Police Week next week, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) will seek a live unanimous consent request today, at 11:30 a.m., to reauthorize the Bulletproof Vest Grant Partnership Program, a federal grant program that helps state and local law enforcement agencies purchase lifesaving vests.
Leahy coauthored the original law establishing the matching grant program, which since 1999 has issued more than one million vests to state and local law enforcement officers throughout the country. Despite having broad support, Republicans have blocked Leahy’s legislation to renew this program since September 2012. Today, Leahy will call on all Senators to support reauthorizing this vital program.
