Making Our Homes More Energy Efficient

For many Vermonters, all too often the high cost of fuel, coupled with bitter Vermont winters, results in a choice between fuel and other essentials such as food or medical services.  In an effort to help families and individuals bridge this gap, Senator Leahy supports a variety of federal programs that provide financial assistance to low and fixed-income individuals for fuel and utility bills, as well as low-cost weatherization and energy-related home repairs.

Senator Leahy knows that the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is one of the most effective tools to help low income seniors and less-fortunate families keep warm during the long, cold winters in New England.  Senator Leahy supported both the Weatherization Assistance Program, which helps families make cost effective energy efficiency improvements to their homes to reduce the burden of high energy costs, and the State Energy Program, which helps states like Vermont support cost effective energy efficiency projects for schools, businesses and farms.

To meet this need, year after year Senator Leahy joins a bipartisan coalition of senators to urge the President to include strong funding for these critical programs in his annual budget.  Senator Leahy  presses the Appropriations Committee to provide increased funding for the LIHEAP, the Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) and State Energy Program (SEP).
