Early Childhood Education
Senator Leahy has long supported programs that promote strong early childhood education. He is a champion of the Head Start and Early Head Start programs. Head Start helps break the cycle of poverty by providing preschool children of low-income families with a comprehensive program to meet their emotional, social, health, nutritional and psychological needs. Early Head Start serves infants and toddlers who are too young to participate in the Head Start Program.
Last year, roughly 1,200 children and families in Vermont benefited from these programs. Still many programs are forced to turn children away, as they lack the resources to provide for all who require care. That is why Senator Leahy was proud to join the Vermont Delegation and Governor Peter Shumlin in securing a four-year $33.4 million federal grant for pre-kindergarten programs at public schools and Head Start agencies throughout Vermont.
