As the Ranking Member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Senator Leahy plays a critical role in the Senate’s consideration of nominations to fill high-ranking positions within the Department of Justice. Senator Leahy has presided over the consideration of Attorneys General, Assistant Attorneys General and other nominations. The Judiciary Committee also plays an important role in the oversight of the Department of Justice and its divisions. Senator Leahy has worked to conduct vigorous oversight of the Justice Department, working to ensure its independence and integrity.
As the most senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, Senator Leahy worked to secure funding for critical grant programs administered by the Justice Department.
Organizations in Vermont, from state and local law enforcement agencies, to the Boys and Girls Clubs of America, have been awarded federal grants by the Justice Department.
